Technology Services Panther

What Is Panther?

Panther is Adelphi's Unix-based system that is used by individuals for such things as electronic file storage and for creating personal web pages. Panther accounts are available to all Adelphi employees, staff, and registered students.

Some Adelphi courses, especially those in Computer Science, require a Panther account in order to complete assignments.

Panther account applications are available from Customer Services at the Information Commons on the second floor of Swirbul library or you can download a PDF application below.

As part of our continuing efforts to upgrade campus technology for Adelphi, The Office of Information and Technology has implemented an updated Panther system. If you currently have a Panther account, you need to be aware of how the system's hardware and software upgrades and security requirements will affect you:

  • The new Panther system will now use your universal Adelphi eCampus username and password for authentication, rather than require separate Panther login credentials, as in the past.

  • The new Panther system now provides encrypted logins exclusively via Secure Shell (SSH), and file transfers via the Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP). Standard Telnet and FTP, which are not encrypted and thus less secure, will no longer be supported. PCs on campus already have the appropriate software installed, and we have provided links to software you can install to access Panther from home.

  • Panther will no longer provide a separate email. Current panther email will continue to be delivered to the old system until the system is deactivated (see below). Please forward all important email messages from your panther mailbox to another email address. Your panther mailbox will not be available after the system is deactivated.

  • The previous Panther system, including all existing data, email, and accounts on the system, will be available at oldpanther.adelphi.edu until June 2008. Please make sure that you back up or transfer all of your necessary files to the new system as soon as possible (see instructions at bottom of page). As an account holder, you are responsible for transferring your own files from the old Panther system.

  • The previous Panther system is still accessible at the oldpanther.adelphi.edu address. We recommend accessing the old system and your files via SSH and SFTP rather than through standard Telnet and FTP.

  • The Panther system has a disk space limit of 250MB per user. Attempts to upload or create more files after you have used your allotted disk quota will fail. Written requests for additional space will be reviewed by Customer Services individually.

If you experience problems or have questions, please contact Customer
Services at 516.877.3340, email support@adelphi.edu, or visit us in the
Information Commons on the Second Floor of Swirbul Library.

Please see below for updated user instructions:
