About Virus Alerts: Faculty, Administration, Staff

In recent years, virus warnings have become commonplace, as today's advanced mail clients are more easily exploited to transmit viruses. While there are many reports of viruses that automatically launch when an e-mail message is opened, GroupWise does not do this – no attached file can be automatically launched from within GroupWise. In addition, the antivirus software installed on all desktops is configured to automatically update its virus database on bootup. Thus, it is important that you shut your PC down at the end of the work day.

Despite all this protection, there is the possibility that a new virus can reach you before your antivirus software is updated. Please be sure to exercise caution when opening unsolicted attachments in your e-mail, especially if the message looks suspicious.

Virus Protection

The best way to detect and avoid viruses is to make sure you log out and shut down your PC at the end of each business day. The Office of Information Technology and Resources updates your antivirus software with each new login. This will ensure that your computer is cleared of all viruses.

To further guard against infection, we also request that you avoid launching all suspicious e-mail attachments.

If you do not have Norton Antivirus on your PC, please contact Customer Services at x3340 to arrange to have the software installed on your PC.

If you do not have any antivirus software at home, we advise you to purchase an antivirus program immediately. If you do have antivirus software at home, please make sure you update your virus definitions on a regular basis.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
