Fall 2009 IT Updates
Over the summer, Adelphi IT completed a number of projects designed to enhance your learning experience and campus life. These projects are detailed below.
Network Bandwidth
Bandwidth has been increased by 45% to 144 megabits per second, ensuring optimal service for access, research and downloading information. A firewall upgrade has further improved network security.
New Computer Labs
- Macintosh Media Lab for Communications (Blodgett 119) is designed to give students an opportunity to study digital forms of news gathering and reporting, photojournalism, and magazine editing and production. In addition to the 21 Mac workstations with server and storage, a high-definition video projection system was installed for playback and class instruction.
- Nursing Computer Lab in Alumnae 112 includes a 14-piece PC workstation lab with printer.
New Commuter Lounge
Post Hall Commuter Lounge is a newly created space that includes four computer workstations, a printer and high-definition TV.
SGA Website
The Student Government Association has a new website that provides information on student life at Adelphi, including student organizations, commuter services, and volunteer activities.
A.C.E.S. Online Course Evaluation
Students will now be able to submit course evaluations online instead of completing paper evaluations. Students will be notified by email during the last two weeks of the class that course evaluations are available for each course in which they are enrolled. All submissions are anonymous. Electronic and paper distribution of the data will be governed by the new Collective Bargaining Agreement for faculty.
Upgrades to Residential Halls
- Campus TV upgraded with more channels, hi-def resolution, and the capability to receive satellite radio stations. It also enables an Emergency Alert system. Browse the CTV channel listing
- Wiring upgrades in Chapman and Linen Residence Halls provide faster connections.
Adelphi Blogs
With this new service Adelphi students, faculty, staff, and even alumni can blog for AU. Several Adelphi students are already blogging on a variety of subjects, from the experience of studying in particular Adelphi programs to the challenges of green living.
Online Bulletins
In a “go green” effort to cut down on printing and make information more current and accessible, the Adelphi University Bulletins have been launched online. The new interactive format and limited printings will allow the information to be updated more frequently than previous editions.
The Course Catalog, which enables a search by course title or upcoming offerings by department, is also now available online.
Converting printed bulletins and catalogs to online formats in order to decrease paper dependence reflects Adelphi’s strong commitment to the environment.
Peer-to-Peer Workshops
Our informal technology sessions, conducted by students, give you a chance to get clarification on a variety of computer topics. You can ask the peer trainers questions about Word, Excel, file management, email, and more. Check the fall schedule and stop by for a session when you're free.
On October 15, we are offering a special PowerPoint Workshop from 4 p.m.-5 p.m. The workshop will teach you how to create a basic slide show and turn it into an effective presentation.
Acceptable Use Policy
An updated version of the policy on Acceptable Use of Adelphi University IT Resources went into effect in June. These rules are in place to ensure an optimal learning environment and the pursuit of academic freedom. Read the full updated policy to make sure you are compliant.
Interactive Learning
