Adelphi's Three-Year Technology Plan for academic years 07/08 through 09/10 will be published this month, including exciting initiatives that affect faculty, staff, students, and the community.
The OITR and administrative offices are evaluating Document Imaging Systems that could greatly improve processes such as admissions applications and financial-aid decisions.
Our programmer analysts are currently working on a system to streamline student and hourly worker payroll. Bringing the process online will make this function more efficient.

If you're still using the term
"DG" at Adelphi, you're showing your age—or tenure. Adelphi hasn't used DG hardware in several years, but people can't seem to shake the easy-to-say acronym. DG is an old name for the database that's now referred to as Administrative Systems. It contains information on courses, grades, financial aid, and housing, as well as business data such as budgets, benefits, and the general ledger.
The initials "DG" stand for Data General, the name of the computer company Adelphi purchased hardware from for maintaining such data. But that was a long time ago. Since then, we've used other manufacturers, and are currently operating with IBM technology. Rather than refer to the database by the name of the hardware company, the term
Administrative Systems was chosen as a way to keep everyone on the same page.
Trivia Questions:
What year did Adelphi stop using the actual DG mainframe?
When did "Administrative Systems" become the official name for the database?

Most of us check email messages no matter where we are these days, but when it's vacation time, you don't want to be chained to your inbox. Let everyone know if you're not going to be able to respond to your emails right away while you're traveling or busy during the holidays.

Check out our video tutorial on setting a vacation rule or follow the instructions below. |
From GroupWise desktop client (Faculty, Administrators and Staff).
To set it through eCampus, see FAQS page.
- In the top toolbar go to Tools > Rules and choose New.
- Type a name in the Rule Name field (e.g., "Vacation Rule").
- Under When event is header, choose New Item from the dropdown menu.
- Next to And items are, select Received. Make sure no other item source is selected.
- Don't make any selections under Item types.
- Under Then actions are, click Add Action to access the dropdown menu > choose Reply
- The Reply dialog box is displayed, showing Reply to Sender selected. If you want your reply to include the sender's original message, select Include message received from sender. Click OK.
- Type a subject line and message in the appropriate fields, for example:
Subject: On Vacation
Message: I will be away from December 23-26. I will reply to your message when I return on December 27.
- Click OK > Save. Verify that the rule has a check mark next to it, indicating that it is enabled, > click Close.
Note: Don't send an email to yourself from the same address to test the rule. You'll get a loop error sending you multiple messages. Send a test from another email address to see whether you get the vacation response.
When you're back from vacation, don't forget to deactivate the vacation rule.
For more helpful tips on managing your email and other files, visit the FAQ section of the OITR site.

Thanks to the work of the Web Administration group, you can personalize what you see when you log in to eCampus.
Customize your eCampus Portal with the calendar areas you want displayed, the message board threads you want listed first, news sources you access frequently, and Google Tools for fun or work.
Plus, First Year Students and those enrolled in University College now have their own portal tabs in eCampus.

All semester long, you can take advantage of self-service hours until 3 AM Sunday–Thursday in rooms 100 and 101 of the Swirbul Library. Use the computer lab or study group room when you need a place to finish your assignments. Enter after midnight with your valid Adelphi ID via the outer door into room 101, at the northeast corner of Swirbul (off of parking field 7, near Levermore Hall).
Plus, check the libraries page for extended computer lab hours and study areas open in December for your Finals preparation.

Students: Are you certain you'll graduate with the tech skills necessary to compete for jobs in your chosen field? If you feel you're lacking fluency in spreadsheets, creating presentations, performing database searches, or working in other programs, please let us know. We are interested in finding out how we can help you be successful in the professional world from the start. The OITR would like to be able to support this need with workshops or other resources. Email technews@adelphi.edu and let us know your interest and feedback on this topic.
