Keeping Viruses & Spam at bay: A Networking Tech's Work is Never Done

There were no classes on Election Day, November 6, but about 70 professors came to the Garden City campus to learn how to enhance their courses during this Faculty Day event sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the OITR, and the Faculty Center for Professional Excellence.

The morning session lead by Dr. Andrew R. Bressette, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Berry College, consisted of a workshop on Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL), which emphasizes the creation of an active learning environment in any discipline. Participants stayed for the afternoon Teaching with Technology Fair, which featured live demonstrations of Moodle, Wimba, clickers, podcasting, 3M digital whiteboards, Turnitin and more tools that can augment course design, whether for a live classroom or for distance education. Moodle is a course management system that offers a flexible alternative to Blackboard. It has been adopted at many academic institutions across the country, and Adelphi is beginning to offer this platform to professors who interested in using it. Moodle is especially attractive for instructors seeking to increase student collaborative learning methods. Some of Moodle's features include student teamwork areas, peer evaluation areas, online journaling, built-in blogs and wikis, as well as a flexible course layout. Existing course materials can be transferred from the Blackboard system.

Wimba provides an online virtual classroom environment that integrates audio, video, document sharing, interactive polling, and a digital whiteboard to enhance instruction. The "live classroom" environment offers instructors similar interactive elements online as are found in a traditional classroom.

For information on how Adelphi faculty are currently using clickers, podcasting, and more, read the article on "Academic Technology in Action" in this edition of Technology@Adelphi.

The FCPE is offering several workshops on Moodle and Wimba. Visit the FCPE site for information on dates and times.
