| Dell Laptop Battery Recall |
announced on: August 16, 2006
|
| It has been well publicized that Dell Computers has announced the recall of some 4 million laptop batteries. O.I.T.R. has contacted our Dell representative to determine if any of our school laptops are subject to recall. The preliminary report indicates that none of the laptop batteries purchased from Dell fall within the scope of this recall. The power source for OITR's technical services is in need of replacement. After reviewing the Academic calendar and consulting with the many departments on campus, it was decided that a July 8th shut down would be the best day to conduct this necessary work. With the exception of telephone, voicemail and connectivity to the internet (coverage will vary depending on location). All computer services will be unavailable beginning at midnight.
We anticipate a 12 hour outage of service. All services will be restored during the afternoon.

| Controlling Unsolicited/Spam Emails |
announced on: June 28, 2006
|
|
Dear Adelphi Community,
Everyone is concerned about controlling unsolicited and potentially harmful emails. Our new spam filtering system removes any emails which it clearly identifies as spam or phishing or those that contain a virus.
While Groupwise already flags some messages as <BULK> when they fit the criteria of being unsolicited, you can have even more control over the emails you receive. Groupwise has a special feature which allows you to create a Bulk Email Folder that captures these emails.
It is important to check your BULK folder frequently to verify that it only contains unsolicited email and not emails that should be in your email inbox. If emails are located in your bulk folder, and you want to receive mail from this address, forward the email to whitelistme@adelphi.edu.
If you receive email that is spam but not labeled as BULK, please forward the email to blacklistme@adelphi.edu.
When forwarding email, simply click on the drop down arrow next to forward and select forward, not forward as attachment. Your request to have the email blocked (blacklisted) or identified (whitelisted) will be processed in approximately one hour after it has been sent.
Please refer to the attached instructions to create a Bulk Email Folder and then to set up a rule enabling Groupwise to capture unsolicited email. Any request to block or allow an email is user-specific and will only effect emails sent to your email address.
If you have any questions, contact Customer Services at 516.877.3340.
Glossary of terms:
SPAM: emails that are an unsolicited, usually commercial or objectionable form of communication (e.g. using e-mail, instant messaging, etc.) sent to a large number of recipients.
PHISHING: emails that are designed to trick you into giving your vital information, e.g. bank account, social security, credit card numbers, and passwords to accounts.
VIRUS: emails that launch harmful acts against your computer.
