Effective Wednesday, November 9, you must create a universal password to access the Adelphi network, email, Blackboard and other online applications.

Create or Reset Your Universal Password

November 9, 2005
Effective November 9, 2005, Adelphi will institute a policy requiring the use of a universal password to access the Adelphi network, email, Blackboard and other online applications. You must reset your existing password on Wednesday, November 9, to create this universal password. Current passwords will be invalid after November 9.

The universal password will provide quicker access to the programs and applications that you use every day. It will be more convenient because you will only need to remember one password.

What do I do on November 9?
You will be given instructions and directed to a password reset page. Customer Services will be available from 8:00 AM to provide immediate assistance to resolve any issue. Your call will be directed to a special line to ensure a prompt response to your questions.

Applications Accessible with Universal Password
Your universal password that will give you access to the following applications.

for Students:

Security, New Password Criteria, and Universal Password Expiration
Security is an important concern. To protect your data and to deter hackers, your universal password must meet these criteria:

  • eight characters
  • combination of alpha-numeric
  • case sensitive
  • cannot be the same as your current password.

For additional security, it is important to log off all applications when finished.

We are pleased to announce that the expiration date for the universal password has been extended from 60 days to 120 days.

Accessing C.L.A.S.S. and ALICAT with eCampus
Accessing C.L.A.S.S. or ALICAT directly via http://class.adelphi.edu/ and http://alicat.adelphi.edu/ will still require you to enter your Adelphi ID and/or PIN.

Virus Warning
announced on: May 6, 2005

Recently, you may have heard that a new e-mail virus has appeared. This new virus, the "Sober" worm, is legitimate, and spreads in much the same way as other recent viruses have spread - a person receives the message, runs the infected attachment, and the virus sends itself out to people whose e-mail addresses are in various files on the person's system.

While our GroupWise system does not automatically launch file attachments, launching a suspicious attachment may still infect your PC and possibly delete important system files, making your system unusable. We do automatically update virus definitions, but your machine will only be updated if you shut your PC down at the end of each work day.

E-mail messages with the following subjects may be infected:

  • Re: Your Password
  • Re: Registration Confirmation
  • Re: Your email was blocked
  • Re: mailing error
  • Re: [blank]
  • Ihr Passwort
  • Mail-Fehler!
  • Ihre E-Mail wurde verweigert
  • Ich bin's, was zum lachen ;)
  • Glueckwunsch: Ihr WM Ticket
  • WM Ticket Verlosung
  • WM-Ticket-Auslosung

In addition, infected messages will also have one of the following filenames as the infected attachment:

  • our_secret.zip
  • mail_info.zip
  • error-mail_info.zip
  • account_info.zip
  • account_info-text.zip
  • LOL.zip
  • autoemail-text.zip
  • _PassWort-Info.zip
  • Fifa_Info-Text.zip
  • okTicket-info.zip

If you do not have Norton Antivirus on your PC, please contact Customer Services at x3340 to arrange to have the software installed on your PC.

If you do not have any antivirus software at home, we advise you to purchase an antivirus program immediately. If you do have antivirus software at home, make sure you update your virus definitions on a regular basis.

For further information on the Sober worm, please read Symantec's summary.
