| Interruption of Service |
announced on: December 22, 2004
|
|
During this winter break, the Office of Information Technology and Resources is upgrading the University's network system.
This upgrade will be performed in several phases. Each phase consists of one to two buildings being upgraded on a scheduled day, which will cause network service interruption. This will affect users' access to email, H: and I: drives, printing, Administrative Systems and all other systems and resources that are available through the Internet.
During the interruption of service of a given building, all users who are not affected that day should keep in mind that those users who are affected will only be reachable by phone - not by email - and will be unable to access any of the above stated network resources.
Please plan and schedule your work accordingly. There will be limited use of your computer during the outage for your building.
On December 27, 28 and 29, network services will be intermittent.
During this work period, various applications may or may not be available for use. Although prolonged, OITR cannot guarantee normal services nor anticipate which applications will be available during your work hours.

Dear Faculty Members:
The end of the fall term is approaching and the Office of Information Technology and Resources is busy preparing for the spring semester.
We understand your software needs may vary each semester. If you require specific software, not currently installed on your PC or perhaps in a teaching lab, the procedure for this request is as follows:
Contact Customer Services and inform them of the software title which you are requesting. You will also need to provide the following information:
- The software version #.
- The vendor or manufacturers name of the software (if available).
- The location in which you need the software installed.
- The amount of licenses required for purchase.
- Please include the account number, along with any other billing instructions we may need to complete the acquisition of the software.
A work order will be generated and Customer Services will provide you with a reference number. This tracking number will provide an accessible history to reference from the day of your request to the day of installation.
For a detailed listing of the software currently installed on each of our labs, please visit OITR's Web site.
The site provides you with diagrams of each lab, including the total number of PCs available and any other equipment installed for general use.
Please allow several weeks lead-time to accommodate the inquiry, testing, and procurement of each piece of software.
If you have any questions or would like to place an order, please contact Customer Services at ext. 3340 or email us at CustomerServices@adelphi.edu.
Thank you and we look forward to another successful semester!

| Virus Warning |
announced on: July 27, 2004
|
|
Recently, a new variation of the Mydoom virus, which hit the Internet earlier this year, started appearing in emails. The email includes an attached ZIP file, and may disguise itself as an bounced or erroneous email. If you have received a similar message, do NOT open the attached ZIP file. You should simply delete the email without launching the attachment.
The following subjects have been used by this version of the virus:
- say hello to my little friend
- click me baby, one more time
- hello
- error
- status
- test
- report
- delivery failed
- Message could not be delivered
- Mail System Error - Returned Mail
- Delivery reports about your email
- Returned mail: see transcript for details
- Returned mail: Data format error
The best way to detect and avoid viruses is by practicing due diligence. Shutting your office computer down at the end of the day is the best thing you can do, as we update your antivirus software with each login. We also ask that you avoid launching all suspicious attachments.
If you do not have Norton Antivirus on your PC, please contact Customer Services at x3340 to arrange to have the software installed on your PC.
If you do not have any antivirus software at home, we advise you to purchase an antivirus program immediately. If you do have antivirus software at home, make sure you update your virus definitions immediately, and at least once per week.
For more information on the latest variation of the Mydoom virus, visit http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.mydoom.m@mm.html

Recently, some of you may have received an e-mail claiming to be from "the Adelphi.edu team" claiming that your e-mail account is being disabled, or that we are sending you an antivirus tool. The e-mail asks you to open a password-protected ZIP file and run the executable inside.
If you have received this e-mail, do NOT open the attached ZIP file, as it contains a variant of the Beagle virus, which has been spreading for about a month. This e-mail was not sent from the Office of Information Technology. You should simply delete the e-mail without launching the attachment.
Of course, the best way to detect and avoid viruses is by practicing due diligence. Shutting your office computer down at the end of the day is the best thing you can do, as we update your antivirus software with each login. We also ask that you avoid launching all suspicious attachments.

The procedures for retrieving your voicemail will remain the same. Unfortunately, due to the limitations of the old system, while we are cutting over from one system to the next, you may be required to dial "9-877" before the extension.
Example: If you call our Customer Services Department at x3340 and you receive the message, "Not a valid number," then dial 9 for an outside line and the number 877-3340. If you are still experiencing problems, try adding in the area code: 9-1-516-877-3340.

| Virus Warning |
announced on: January 27, 2004
|
|
You may have heard that a new e-mail virus has appeared in the last 24 hours. This new virus, the "MyDoom" worm (also known as Novarg), is legitimate, and spreads in much the same way as other recent viruses have spread - a person receives the message, the infected attachment is run, and it sends itself out to others before allowing outside remote access to the infected PC. Like previous viruses, this one will forge the e-mail to make it look like it came from someone other than the person whose machine is infected.
While our Groupwise System does not automatically launch file attachments, launching a suspicious attachment may still infect your PC and possibly delete important system files, making your system unusable. We do automatically update virus definitions, but your machine will only be updated if you shut your PC down at the end of each work day.
If you do not have Norton Antivirus on your PC, please contact Customer Services at x3340 to arrange to have the software installed onto your PC.
If you do not have any antivirus software at home, we advise you to purchase an antivirus program immediately. If you do have antivirus software at home, make sure you update your virus definitions on a regular basis.
For further information on the MyDoom worm, please read Symantec's summary at Symantec's website.
Please note: the MyDoom worm only affects systems running Windows 95, NT, 98, Me, 2000 or XP. It does not effect Macintosh computers, or systems running Linux.
