Additional information on hybrid multi-media classrooms can be found at: http://infotech.adelphi.edu/resources/labs/hybrid.php.

This project is a major undertaking and involves many departments. The Adelphi Homepage will continue to evolve and your input will assist us in making the website a valuable tool.

In addition, we have also implemented an anti-spam software in early June to filter unwanted email. For more information and new features of GroupWise, please read our "Web Access Notice" from August 14, 2003.

Wireless Communication: Expansion of wireless communication now includes the common area in the University Center and Post Hall. To see the coverage map and how to connect to wireless network, you may access the website at http://infotech.adelphi.edu/resources/wireless.php.

Anti Virus Information
announced on: August 20, 2003
In the last few weeks, two viruses have become very widespread - "Blaster" and "SoBig". This message is to keep you aware of these viruses, what the Office of Information Technology does to protect you from them, and what you can do to keep your PC virus-free.

The Blaster virus, which is also called "LovSan", flared up last week. In layman's terms, Blaster takes advantage of a bug in Windows 2000 and Windows XP to install a program on your PC that was supposed to attack www.windowsupdate.com, Microsoft's Windows Update web page. If your machine isinfected by the Blaster virus, your PC may shut itself down without you telling it to. Microsoft patched the bug several weeks ago, and that patch has been propagated out to the Adelphi community. However, if you notice your machine restarting, please contact Customer Services.

More information on Blaster/LovSan, visit Symantec's website.

The SoBig virus flared up recently, and is similar to many e-mail viruses, in that once it infects a machine, it searches that machine for e-mail addresses to send itself to. The worm can also allow hackers outside access to an infected machine to run programs to act as a spam relay.

The SoBig virus sends itself out with one of the following subjects:
Re: Details
Re: Approved
Re: Re: My details
Re: Thank you!
Re: That movie
Re: Wicked screensaver
Re: Your application
Thank you!
Your details

If you receive an e-mail with any of these subjects, delete it immediately.

The Office of Information Technology is committed to updating antivirus definitions both on our e-mail gateway and on individual PCs, so the viruses should not get to you at all. However, it is also important to log out of your PC each night. When you log in, part of the login process updates your Norton Antivirus software, protecting you from the latest viruses.

We thank you for your help in keeping computer viruses off Adelphi's network.

GroupWise and Filtering Spam Email
announced on: June 2, 2003

The Office of Information Technology & Resources is proud to announce the implementation of Spam Assassin Software. This product adds "BULK:" to the beginning of the subject line of each email message that it suspects as "spam mail." Although this identification system is not perfect, we recommend that each end user filter suspected spam email into a separate folder. This folder may be reviewed and handled at your leisure.

The documentation (MS Word file, 66KB) provides step-by-step instructions for you to filter spam email ("BULK:") into a separate folder. These steps involve creating a bulk email folder, creating a filter rule which will automatically move incoming identified ("tagged") bulk email into the bulk email folder, and finally testing the process.

An account has been created for you to forward spam messages to. All you need to do is forward the spam messages to spamhost@adelphi.edu. In the future, these messages will be black-listed, blocked and not permitted to enter our e-mail system.

If you need assistance with either of these procedures, please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Services Department.

We highly welcome your feedback on this new service. Please do not hesitate to let us know if this solution is working for you.

Sporadic Network Connectivity
announced on: March 10, 2003
Sporadic Network Connectivity Issues occurred over the weekend due to routing issues out on the Internet. All routes have been repaired and connectivity has been fully restored.
Internet Usage
announced on: March 7, 2003

To All Adelphi Students:

We would like your Internet experience here at Adelphi to be a positive one. With so many resources available and ways to use the Internet, it has become a daily part of life for many of us.

With that in mind, you should be aware of some issues that could adversely affect your, and others, network experience, and how to prevent them.

Bandwidth
Although we have modern equipment and continue to upgrade the network regularly, excessive bandwidth use can slow the network down for everyone. If you use  peer-to-peer file-sharing software (e.g., KaZaA, Gnutella, Morpheus, etc.), please use it responsibly.  To preserve the bandwidth resources for the Adelphi Community, it is vital that file-sharing is turned off by all computer users on campus.  Since we have a robust connection to the Internet, users from outside the University will download a file preferentially from someone on campus as opposed to a user elsewhere with a modem or even a cable modem.  This has been the single largest problem with our bandwidth resource.  The benefits of not sharing files to the Internet are:

  1. Increase in speed for all campus computer users.
  2. Specialized ports can remain open, allowing games and non-standard Internet applications to be used.

For instructions to turn off file-sharing please see:
http://security.uchicago.edu/peer-to-peer/no_fileshare.shtml

Statistics are collected on internet usage and users found to be using large amounts of bandwidth from allowing file-sharing to the Internet will have their Internet connection disabled.  These students will need to contact Customer Services to become re-enabled.

Copyright
With so much information freely available on the Internet, it may almost appear that much of what you see is in the public domain. But the fact is that just about everything you see, read or download from the Internet is copyright protected. Email you send is copyrighted to you; email you receive is copyrighted to the sender; music you download is copyrighted to the artist or producer of the music.  Sort the facts from the myths about copyright:

Security
Keep your system software up to date by running system updaters regularly. These updates fix bugs and patch system vulnerabilities. Use the Windows updater in the Start menu or the Macintosh Software Update control panel (OS 9) or system preference (OS X). For information on currently known vulnerabilities that are being exploited, see:

Policy for E-mail Mass Distribution
announced on: January 21, 2003

In the last few months, there has been escalating use of e-mail as a mechanism for distributing announcements, notices, personal ads, etc., to a campus-wide audience. No doubt the number of these distributions will continue to grow. It is obvious that there is a need to define a consistent policy for the use of campus e-mail distribution and to provide a mechanism for doing so.

There are several reasons for establishing guidelines and procedures for e-mail distribution lists, and for identifying alternative means for sending broadcast announcements. One is simply the impact of mass distribution on the campus e-mail systems. The excessive or casual use of distribution lists not only interferes with non-list e-mail delivery, but also requires the University to invest in larger and faster systems. Most e-mails sent to the campus list are replicated, creating thousands of copies of active e-mails. A second reason deals with the recipients themselves. We receive many complaints from members of the community indicating they do not want to receive certain unsolicited e-mails. In fact, it is also one of the main reasons why many students choose not to use their Adelphi e-mail accounts, despite the fact that a new, user-friendly e-mail system was installed recently. Further, the absence of a common policy has resulted in growing confusion and misunderstanding concerning use of the distribution lists.

In addition to mass e-mail distribution, the Office of Information Technology and Resources (OITR) offers two other means for the community to deliver electronic messages. One method is to use the Web-based bulletin board function that is currently available to the Adelphi community at http://forums.adelphi.edu. Another method that can be used is Listserv e-mail mailing lists.

The attached Policy for E-mail Mass Distribution will be effective Thursday, January 23. The cooperation of the community in following the policy will allow us to use our e-mail systems to their full capacity and, at the same time, permit faculty, students and staff to communicate efficiently. I hope that you agree that these new procedures constitute improved use of our electronic infrastructure.

Thank you.
