Fall 2009 IT Updates
Reflecting its commitment to creating a more interactive and collaborative learning environment, Adelphi’s Office of Information Technology and Resources completed many projects over the summer. The information below supplements the highlights that were mentioned in the IT welcome back email.
Network Bandwidth
Bandwidth has been increased by 45% to 144 megabits ensuring optimal service for access, research and downloading information. A firewall upgrade has improved network security.
Classroom Technology Enhancements
- Hagedorn 104 and 211 have new 3M digital projection systems, whiteboards, and foldout drawers with PC workstations.
- Levermore 305 was upgraded with new hardware and Crestron controls to provide the same standard of service used throughout campus.
- Hay Lab in Swirbul Library now includes a projection system whose main video source will come from the teacher's station.
- Hy Weinberg has six new technology rooms, all of them with projection systems and PC workstations. Room 101 has been outfitted with a SMART Board and Room 220 has a new podium with PC and DVD/VCR combo.
- Post Hall Commuter Lounge is a newly created space that includes four computer workstations, a printer and high-definition TV.
New Computer Labs
- Macintosh Media Lab for Communications (Blodgett 119) is designed to give students an opportunity to study digital forms of news gathering and reporting, photojournalism, and magazine editing and production. In addition to the 21 Mac workstations with server and storage, a high-definition video projection system was installed for playback and class instruction.

Adobe Connect
Adelphi now offers Adobe Connect and Vyew to create online classroom environments that integrate audio, video, document sharing, polling, a shared digital whiteboard and more. This application replaces Wimba. The FCPE will provide information and training on how to incorporate it into your teaching.
A.C.E.S. Online Course Evaluation
Paper course evaluations will no longer be collected during class, but will be collected electronically. During the last two weeks of the class, students will receive an email notifying them that course evaluations are available for each course in which they are enrolled. All submissions are anonymous. Electronic and paper distribution of the data will be limited according to terms of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Acceptable Use Policy
An updated version of the policy on Acceptable Use of Adelphi University IT Resources went into effect in June. These rules are in place to ensure an optimal learning environment and the pursuit of academic freedom. Read the full updated policy to make sure you are compliant.
Adelphi Blogs
With this new service, Adelphi students, faculty, staff, and even alumni can blog for AU. Several Adelphi students are already blogging on a variety of subjects, from the experience of studying in particular Adelphi programs to the challenges of green living.
Online Bulletins
In a “go green” effort to cut down on printing and make information more current and accessible, the Adelphi University Bulletins have been launched online. The new interactive format and limited printings will allow the information to be updated more frequently than previous editions.
The Course Catalog which enables a search by course title or upcoming offerings by department is also now available online.
Converting printed bulletins and catalogs to online formats in order to decrease paper dependence reflects Adelphi’s strong commitment to the environment.
Workshops
The IT staff offers brief, informative workshops to faculty, administration, and staff on topics such as GroupWise email, Microsoft Office, information security, and file storage to help you to enhance your job performance. See our fall schedule and sign up for a workshop today.
Atomic Learning
Coming soon...Adelphi has obtained a license for Atomic Learning, an extensive online training resource that will help integrate technology into the classroom and in other campus activities. Step-by-step tutorials and software applications, technology integration resources, and workshops on emerging technology are a few of its many educational features for both PCs and Macs.
We are continuing our efforts to provide the highest level of technology and support. We look forward to working with you and welcome your comments.
