Overview
AU Gmail is now the only student email system at Adelphi. GroupWise is no longer accessible to students. Faculty, Administration, and Staff remain on the GroupWise system.
If you have specialized mailing lists (such as your student workers, advisees, or a class rosters) you need to update those addresses manually. Please check your GroupWise Address Book and Frequent Contacts for student addresses.
Students' AU Gmail addresses should be appended with @mail.adelphi.edu, whereas on GroupWise they were @adelphi.edu. For online services such as C.L.A.S.S. and Moodle, as well as University-wide mailing lists, this change was automatic.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Are faculty, staff and administrators switching to Gmail as well?
All faculty, administrative and staff email will be remaining on the GroupWise system. An analysis of the legal and security implications mandated that our business communications remain fully within the Adelphi network.
- Why have we moved students away from GroupWise?
GroupWise was unable to provide the storage capacity and features that our students need to perform their academic studies. Moreover, because students are able to keep their Adelphi email address after they’ve graduated, this creates an ever-growing base of customers. This increasing need for maintenance, back-up, and archiving of the campus email servers made partnering with Google the smart choice for Adelphi.
The switch to Gmail was planned with cooperation from the SGA and the Student Technology Advisory Committee. The SCAIT and ACC committees were involved in the planning as well. More than 40% of colleges and universities surveyed by Educause have migrated their student email to external companies such as Gmail and MSN, including Hofstra, which successfully transitioned to Gmail in April 2007.
- Are all Adelphi students currently using AU Gmail?
Since January 12, 2009, all official University communications have beensent to students' Adelphi Gmail accounts instead of to their GroupWise accounts—this includes notices from online systems such as C.L.A.S.S. and Moodle.
It is your students' responsibility to activate and monitor their Gmail accounts and retrieve their messages. Students had access to their GroupWise accounts up until 11:59 p.m. on April 13, 2009.
- Can I track whether a student has received or opened my email message on the new system?
There is no mail tracking feature you can employ to find out if a student has opened your email message. Although this feature may have been previously available, please keep in mind that many students were forwarding their email to other systems, so the reports of mail being opened or unopened was not really possible to verify for accuracy.
- Are students required to use their AU Gmail accounts?
AU Gmail is now the official vehicle the University uses to communicate with students, including official notices and messages from Adelphi administration and staff, as well as notifications from C.L.A.S.S., Moodle, and Blackboard.
AU Gmail also offers students many improvements over their old GroupWise webmail, including Google Apps features such as the Calendar (for easy integration of campus events) and Docs (to collaborate on group projects).
It is up to the individual user to decide whether or not they would like to utilize the AU Gmail account directly or forward mail sent to the AU Gmail account to an outside account at their own risk.
